Rabbit hutches and runs
Rabbit hutches for sale
Almost all hutches and runs for sale on the high street or from online retailers are actually too small and below welfare standards. Even big shops such as Pets at Home sell accommodation that is simply not big enough. This is because pet shops and retailers are here to make money. There are currently no laws in the UK regulating the size of cages that can be sold so shops stock what sells and, in doing so, perpetuate misinformation on what rabbits need.
Rabbit hutch sizes
Rabbits need access to a predator-proof space of at least 3m x 2m at all times. Because of this a hutch is only appropriate if it is always open as part of a bigger enclosure. For outside housing we recommend building an aviary with predator-proof wire from 4wire.
How much space does my rabbit need?
Rabbits are high energy mammals. In the wild they will roam for miles each day foraging for food and exploring. Anyone who has given a rabbit space knows that they love to run, jump, and ‘binky’. Not only is it vital for a bunnies’ welfare that they have space to behave naturally it’s also a lot more fun for you as their guardian to be able to watch them let off steam! 3m x 2m x 1m of unbroken space is the very minimum amount of space a rabbit should ever be in.
Creating safe housing
If your rabbits live outside, it is very important to predator-proof the housing properly. Chicken wire is not strong enough to keep out a fox or smaller predators like weasels. You need to make sure all wire is 16G and the holes are no bigger than 13mm x 13mm. You will also need to ensure the floor is solid or meshed underneath to prevent anyone digging in or out.
